Risk Profile Questionnaire

Use this free risk profile questionnaire to find an indicative investor profile. Answer nine short questions about your financial situation and your comfort with risk. The questionnaire scores your ability to take risk and your willingness to take it separately, and your profile follows the lower of the two.
How this risk profile questionnaire works
Five questions look at your situation: when you need the money, how stable your income is, how many people depend on it, how long your emergency fund would last, and how large this investment is compared with your total savings. Four questions look at your comfort with risk: your experience, how you would react to a fall, the outcomes you prefer and the largest temporary fall you could accept. Each answer scores from 1 to 5, and the answers in each group are averaged. Your profile follows the lower of the two averages, because being comfortable with losses does not mean you can afford them, and being able to afford them does not help if you would sell in a fall. If you need the money within five years, your profile is also capped, because a short time horizon leaves little time to recover from a fall.
The five profiles
The profiles run from Conservative to Aggressive, each with an indicative equity range: Conservative 0–20%, Moderately conservative 20–40%, Moderate 40–60%, Moderately aggressive 60–80% and Aggressive 80–100%. The ranges are wide on purpose. They are a starting point for a conversation, not a recommended allocation.
Why ability and willingness are scored separately
Two investors can feel equally calm about risk and still have very different room for losses. A person with a steady income, no dependants and a large emergency fund can afford more risk than someone with an uncertain income and a family to support, even if both say they are comfortable with ups and downs. Scoring the two separately shows which one is setting your profile.
What this questionnaire does not do
It is not a suitability assessment, and it does not recommend any scheme or product. It cannot take account of your goals, your existing investments, your tax position or your full circumstances, and your answers may change with time and with markets. A profile is best reviewed with someone who knows your whole situation, and revisited when your circumstances change.
अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले सवाल (FAQs)
Is there a right or wrong answer?
No. The questions are meant to describe you honestly, not to test you. Answer as you actually are, not as you would like to be.
Why is my profile lower than I expected?
Your profile follows the lower of your ability and your willingness, and it may be capped by your time horizon. The result shows both scores and any cap, so you can see which one is holding it down.
Does a profile tell me what to invest in?
No. It gives an indicative equity range as a starting point. The right mix depends on your goals and circumstances. See our Asset Allocation Glide Path calculator for how a mix can change as a goal nears.
Is this investment advice?
No. It is a tool to help you think about risk and to start a conversation. Mutual fund investments are subject to market risks. Read all scheme related documents carefully. Learn more on the AMFI investor awareness site.
How often should I retake it?
Whenever your situation changes, for example a new job, a new dependant or a major goal coming closer, and after any big market move that changed how you feel about risk.
