Pause SIP Calculator

Use this free pause SIP calculator to see what a break in your SIP can cost you. Enter your monthly SIP, an expected return, the total plan period, when you would pause, and for how many months. The calculator compares a SIP that never stops with one that pauses.
How this pause SIP calculator works
Both investors invest the same monthly amount, but one skips the instalments for the months you choose. The invested money keeps growing during the pause, but nothing new is added. For example, a ₹10,000 SIP at an assumed 12% return for 20 years would grow to about ₹1 crore. Pausing for 12 months after year 5 would reduce that to about ₹93.1 lakh, a loss of about ₹6.8 lakh or 6.8%, even though only ₹1.2 lakh of instalments were skipped. The result is an illustration, not a forecast.
What if I stop completely?
Set the pause to a very long period, such as 240 months, to see the effect of stopping altogether. In the example above, stopping after 5 years leaves only about half the value, because the later years are when a SIP’s growth builds fastest.
Why a pause costs more than the skipped instalments
Each instalment you skip also misses the growth it would have earned over the years that follow, and that growth would itself have grown. The earlier the pause, the more years of growth are lost.
What this calculator does not include
The result is before taxes, exit loads and fund expenses, and it assumes the same return in every year. It does not show how markets behave during your break. It also assumes your SIP amount stays the same and that you resume at the same amount after the pause.
Frequently asked questions
Is it better to pause or to reduce my SIP?
If money is tight, many planners suggest reducing the SIP and continuing rather than stopping completely, because you stay in the habit and stay invested. Try a lower amount in our SIP calculator to compare.
Can I pause a SIP without a penalty?
Many fund houses offer a SIP pause facility for a few months, though the rules differ by fund house and scheme. Please check with us or with the fund house.
Is the return shown guaranteed?
No. Mutual fund returns are market-linked and can be higher or lower than the rate you enter. Mutual fund investments are subject to market risks. Read all scheme related documents carefully. Learn more on the AMFI investor awareness site.
What if I cannot continue at the same amount later?
Our Delayed SIP calculator shows how much more you would need to invest later to reach the same goal, and our Cost of Delay calculator shows what waiting costs.
